3 Months of Cloth Diapering

I was going through photos on my desktop and noticed I had this one just sitting there.  It’s from the All About Babies & Kids Expo in Houston, held back in July.

By this point, I had been cloth diapering only a month, and had been in touch with Sara at Kissaluvs, to get permission to post some graphics from the company on my blog.  She was wonderful and we got quite a dialogue going back and forth.  I was delighted to meet her, and much of her family – the Kissaluvs family – at the Expo.

Here we are, 3 months after the first cloth diaper purchase I ever made, and I thought it was good timing to give an update.  For one thing, I started making some of my own diapers, and that certainly cut down on some costs.  So did potty training my son.  Anyway… I’m still cloth diapering my daughter and mostly with Kissaluv’s Marvels, that I have modified to make the inserts removable.  I know, making an all-in-one into two is making it an all in two, but the don’t NEED to be removed… it just makes cleaning the inserts a little easier.

So… my daughter is now at the point where she pees so much that we have occasional leaks, no matter whether I use my homemade diapers or the Kissa’s ones.  If I double up, I seem to have fewer issues, by far, but we’re definitely in the doubling stage.  She gets occasional diaper rashes, most likely from ammonia build up in the diapers.  It’s about time to strip them again.  I find that I’m doing that once a month.  I gave up on liners.  They worked 50% of the time and I’ve gotten used to cleaning the diapers by hand, so why spend money on the “middle man,” right?

My son dropped a toy car into the toilet the other day, where he had just pooped.  My husband was disgusted, my son was terrified his toy was gone forever, and I grabbed a giant zip-lock, got the car out, started cleaning it with soap and water and then sanitizer and we went on about our day.  I think that cloth diapering helped me get over some of my ewww-issues.  LOL!  (Think that was TMI?  Wrong blog!!)

I got over my CLOTH-ONLY panic and decided that using up the disposables I had on hand was worthwhile, so when I’m running behind on laundry or we’re really in a hurry, I do grab a few of the last of the Pampers.  But the unopened case I had?  It got Craigslisted.  And sold, in a matter of hours.  Score!  So, I don’t intend to spend money on diapers again.

At this point, I’m thrilled we went this route, and if we have more children, I think we’ll start off with cloth instead of disposables.  I’m actually a little bummed that we’ll likely be potty training my youngest soon… it seems I was so late getting into cloth diapering, I almost hate to see it go.  They are SO cute!
