Preschool Homeschool : The Letter T

We opted to homeschool instead of enrolling our son in standard Pre-K. I am sharing with you some of the activities we did to learn about the letter T. Whether you homeschool or not, these are short and sweet ways to reinforce letter learning.

We started our day with Scrambled eggs w/ Turkey Breast meat in them. My kids were very excited to see Scrabble Cheez Its on the plate – I actually dug through and gave them only Letter T crackers.

Walphabet’s ABCs Song : We always start with an ABC song. It is something that they can get excited about, since they generally know the tune, and that everyone can enjoy.

I use these for my oldest (4), while my youngest (2), colors on her own. She got Tinkerbell, but T-Bone (Clifford) & Thomas the Tank Engine are other great options.

We did the T is for Tree Craft by Crystal&Co, on the first go-round. Her Letter of the Week activities are adorable! I skipped the button fruits, but the kids did a great job putting these together!

T is for Train from Counting Coconuts, is the craft we did on the second T day. (This letter was tough for my munchkins, so we revisited it again, later.) I cut the train tracks with an Xacto knife and then pre-glued it to some paper so that it didn’t fall apart. I cut the shapes for the trains, in advance, and then told the kids which ones to find for each part of “building” the trains.

T is for Tools : We are a very handy household. I recently built my munckins their own workbench (I’ll have to post on that some time) and they each have their own tool boxes.

For this “craft,” I cut two pieces of wood for each of my kids; one long and one short. I set out their hammers, the wood and one nail each. They were super interested in school time, when they saw their workbench in the kitchen.

I helped start the nail in the middle of the short piece. For my son (4), I just got it started and let him hammer it the rest of the way through the first piece. Then, I lined it up above the second piece and let him finish it in. For my daughter (2), I hammered the nail through the first piece and helped her hammer it onto the second. Later today, we will paint them.

My kids are so much like their father and me. We all love using our hands and tools and making things. I don’t want my kids to have to call someone to fix everything for them, when they are older, so I’m hoping to teach them to be “handy.”
