Preschool Homeschool : The Letter D

We opted to homeschool instead of enrolling our son in standard Pre-K.  I am sharing with you some of the activities we did to learn about the letter D.  Whether you homeschool or not, these are short and sweet ways to reinforce letter learning.

For snacks, we had Dirt (see later in post.)  It didn’t matter what we ate for our evening meal because it was still Dinner.

We read Danny and the DinosaurGiraffes Can’t Dance and Dinosaur Roar.

Walphabet’s ABCs Song :  We always start with an ABC song.  It is something that they can get excited about, since they generally know the tune, and that everyone can enjoy.

Coloring Pages:  The kids got Daniel Tiger & Daniel (Voltron) coloring sheets, today.  Doc McStuffins or  Dora & Diego are other options.

Highlight-a-Letter by Babbling Abby.  I use these for my oldest (4), with the more complicated page (including tracing and printing space) on the first day and the less complicated one for review on the second. My youngest (2), colors on her own so that I can assist her brother with this.

Even though we have two other “projects” for this letter, I like having a craft, on our wall, that leaves a visual reminder of the letter sound.  The Letter D Duck craft from Play and Learn with Dana was adorable!

We made the Chinese Dragon Dance Toy Craft from Schoolkid.ph.  There is another beautiful template at craftJr.  My son wanted to leave his “boring,” but they could potentially be GORGEOUS with an older crafty kiddo.  The kids enjoyed making their dragons dance while they watched the next video:

For our school time snack, we made D is for Dirt by Crystal&Co.  Dirt is one of my favorite snacks and helping in the kitchen is something my kids LOVE to do.   We used our Cuisinart Smart Stick to crush the cookies.  The best part, for me, was that they fully enjoyed making it, but won’t eat it.  Oh darn… Momma will have to eat this one.  (Happy Dance!  Happy Dance!)

We were going to go on a Dragon Hunt from PBS, but our school time was thrown off by a late start, so we’ll probably be doing that another time.  Still, a cute idea!

Starfall’s Letter D Activity

These great, flash, interactive activities are a wonderful and FREE resource, as well!  The kids really enjoy them!

Finally, we hung the Letter D on the wall, to join ABCH & T.

I hope you enjoyed!  I look forward to sharing more!
