Preschool Homeschool : The Letter K
We opted to homeschool instead of enrolling our son in standard Pre-K. I am sharing with you some of the activities we did to learn about the letter K. Whether you homeschool or not, these are short and sweet ways to reinforce letter learning.
For breakfast, we had Kix. We don’t drink Kool-Aid, and there were no good Kiwis at the grocery, so that was the extent of our food learning. This was a day-off for hubby, so I didn’t have any prepared book list.
Walphabet’s ABCs Song : We always start with an ABC song. It is something that they can get excited about, since they generally know the tune, and that everyone can enjoy.
The first activity we did was a Lego Duplo Alphabet Mat from 123Homeschool4Me.com. I’m quickly learning that my son is a very tactile learner. Using many different hands-on approaches to letter recognition is yielding AMAZING results! He very much enjoys lining up the blocks onto his page and then turning the letter into something else when he is done.
Highlight-a-Letter by Babbling Abby. I use these for my oldest (4), with the more complicated page (including tracing and printing space) on the first day and the less complicated one for review on the second.
My youngest (2), colors on her own so that I can assist her brother with this. She got Katarina Kittycat (Daniel Tiger) today. Komodo (Animal Mechanicals) & Keith (Voltron) are other alternatives.
We did a K is for Kite craft, inspired by The Princess and the Tot. I cut all of the parts in advance and helped guide them to placing them in the “proper” positions. Some times they want me to lead, and other times they do not. We go day by day. They were upset that their letter Kites don’t fly, so that might be a concern for other families, as well. I think I officially owe them a Kite Flying day now.
Starfall’s Letter K Activity : These great, flash, interactive activities are a wonderful and FREE resource, as well! The kids really enjoy them! The whole set is available in the Google Play store for Android, Amazon App Store or iTunes!
The kids really do enjoy the Starfall activities! It has worked as a great final review each day, and a quiet moment before free play.
We added the Letter K to our letter wall and hung today’s artwork on the wall, or glued it into the kids’ notebooks (whichever they preferred.)
