Preschool Homeschool : The Letter P
We opted to homeschool instead of enrolling our son in standard Pre-K. I am sharing with you some of the activities we did to learn about the letter P. Whether you homeschool or not, these are short and sweet ways to reinforce letter learning.
NOTE: My son had a hard time remembering what this letter was called. We finally got to the point of asking, “What do you do on the potty?” “Pee!” And… he’s all set now. Good luck!
For dinner, we had Pupusas! I cooked pork in the crock-pot, with cumin, salt, pepper, vinegar and broth. I slow cooked it all afternoon. Then, I pulled out the meat, leaving the liquid in the pot, and put it into the blender to shred easily. I added more cumin and salt and put the shredded meat in the fridge to cool (Really, to wait for hubby to come home.) I put a round of Queso Fresco in a bowl with a pack of shredded mozzarella cheese and microwaved it for 10 seconds. Then, I mixed the cheeses together, breaking up the Queso Fresco. Hubby mixed dry masa with water and a bit of salt until it was a consistency that we liked. Then, we oiled our hands and made what looked like pancakes, in our hands and put meat and cheese and refried beans into the middle. We took the edges and wrapped the masa around the filling. Once they were closed, we flattened them out and put them into a nonstick, lightly oiled, frying pan. We cooked them on medium until there were dark spots on either side. YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY!!! Walphabet’s ABCs Song : We always start with an ABC song. It is something that they can get excited about, since they generally know the tune, and that everyone can enjoy.
I poured Pickling Salt into a cookie sheet and shook it a bit to make it flat. (You can use whatever salt you want… or sand… or whatever…) Then, I drew an example and the kids practiced “writing” the letter “P”. My son (4) especially loves this activity. My daughter (2) enjoys it too. Fun sensory play!
We also used Lego Duplo Alphabet Mats from 123Homeschool4Me.com. Both kids love it! My son is a VERY tactile learner, and these activities just ROCK!
We did the P is for Pig craft, by Lil’ Miss Smartypants. We used pipe cleaners for the tails and I helped the kids curl them around a pencil. We used painters tape to tape the tails onto the back of the letter. Then, they used their glue sticks to attach the rest. The only complaint was that the pigs were missing feet (This is a common complaint with our letter activities…) Super cute!
Highlight-a-Letter by Babbling Abby. I use these for my oldest (4), while my youngest (2), colors on her own. She got Peg + Cat today. Pidge (Voltron) & Prince Wednesday (Daniel Tiger) are other options
