Preschool Homeschool : The Letter H
This year, we opted to homeschool instead of enrolling our son in standard Pre-K. You can read a little more about that here. If you already read that post, this one will have a few familiar parts, but it also includes many new ones.
I am sharing with you some of the activities we did to learn about the letter H. Whether you homeschool or not, these are short and sweet ways to reinforce letter learning.
My daughter is a fan of Harry and His Bucket full of Dinosaurs, so I printed out a Harry coloring page for her. My son is a fan of Voltron Force, so he got a Hunk coloring page. I also printed out a Captain Hook coloring page to keep my youngest busy.
On this particular day, my son chose to just instruct me what to color, including the addition of a piece of pizza for Hunk to eat. Cute.

I use the more complicated page (including tracing and printing space) on the first day and the less complicated one for review on the second.
I am SO excited to be using this resource! My son responds so well to it, and seems to be growing in confidence. He enjoys the little “wins” and is getting more comfortable guessing at the other letters.
We work very closely on this activity. He chooses whether he wants to make red “x”s or color in correct squares with yellow. I help with whichever he doesn’t choose. He makes the decisions, and I help refocus him. This one-on-one learning is fantastic!
I loved the idea of the H is for House craft from Crystal & Co.
I pre-cut all of the parts and assisted my munchkins as they needed, in positioning or gluing, etc. They enjoyed it very much!
One of their favorite parts of craft time is choosing where to display their art. We use painter’s tape (the blue kind) to hang things, so that our walls don’t get trashed.
On fingerpaint paper, I used a Sharpie and drew the outline of a Letter H and hearts. I gave one page to each of my little learners and encouraged them to paint. I used fingerpaints on a small cookie sheet. My daughter was willing to paint with one finger. My son needed a piece of paper towel to use instead. Next time, I will have the paintbrushes ready as well. Once they filled in the H and the hearts, I mixed up the remaining paint and demonstrated a handprint. Only my youngest was willing to get her hands that messy, but the handprints (letter H, you see…) were a nice touch on hers. They enjoyed this activity very much.
These great, flash, interactive activities are a wonderful and FREE resource, as well! The kids really enjoy them!

I also hung pictures of the Letter H, in upper AND lowercase, on our wall. We already had the Letter A from our first lesson, and the kids both did well determining which letters were which. Little steps…
Again, Another activity is forming playdough into the shape of the letter being learned. Some children, especially if they may be dyslexic, seem to learn better in a more three-dimensional manner. Because playdough is more tactile, it helps them learn in a different way. I plan to print the letter on a half-sheet of paper and then laminate it so that they can practice on it and not ruin the paper or the playdough.
