Preschool Homeschool : The Letter C
We opted to homeschool instead of enrolling our son in standard Pre-K. I am sharing with you some of the activities we did to learn about the letter C. Whether you homeschool or not, these are short and sweet ways to reinforce letter learning.
We started our day with Cheerios and Cold milk. As part of our lessons, we baked Cookies. For lunch, we had Chicken and Cheese Quesadillas with Cashews and Carrots for snack.
Our morning didn’t start as early, or as smoothly as I had expected. One of the benefits of homeschooling is the ability to adapt the whole plan when the unexpected occurs. I read all four of our stories for today, at the kitchen table, while my son ate his Cheerios. It worked out amazingly well. We read: Caps for Sale, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Counting Crocodiles and The Very Cranky Bear with me!
Caps for Sale was a new one to us. We had been given it as a gift, but this was the first time I read it to them. I had expected to lose their interest, as the book is wordier than most we had read so far, BUT they stayed interested. The only complaint was that the cover shows the man in the tree, and at no point in the story does he EVER go there. I have to give my 4 year old credit for noticing that. Fun story!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is a familiar story, but the kids had fun talking about what gives them tummy aches and how Caterpillars turn into Butterflies (which we made for B Day).
Counting Crocodiles is a cute story about a Monkey who wants to get to a banana tree but has to cross a sea of crocodiles. We talked about problem solving.
The Very Cranky Bear is a story that highlights kindness. A cranky bear kicks some other animals out of a cave and into the rain and cold. Most of them try to give him what they think is important to them, but ONE finds out what the bear wants and gives something of his own to help the bear. Generosity and kindness are things we discussed.
Walphabet’s ABCs Song : We always start with an ABC song. It is something that they can get excited about, since they generally know the tune, and that everyone can enjoy.

Coloring Pages: The kids got Chase the Rescue Bot & Caillou coloring sheets, today. Clifford, Cleo, Curious George & Clank (Jake & Neverland Pirates) are other options.
The Letter C Song by ABC Mouse
Highlight-a-Letter by Babbling Abby. I use these for my oldest (4), with the more complicated page (including tracing and printing space) on the first day and the less complicated one for review on the second.
I use printouts from the Letter of the Week Curriculum for my youngest (2), because I already own them, but it’s mostly so that I can work one on one with my oldest.
We did the C is for Cloud Craft from Discover, Explore, Learn. I asked the kids, “What is in the sky that begins with the kuh kuh sound?” I put some elmers glue onto a Letter C and let the kids put cotton balls onto it. In the future, I’d print it onto a blue page, or cut out the C. There wasn’t much contrast on ours.
We did the C is for Car Craft By Crystal & Co. Her Letter of the Week activities are wonderful! My youngest(2) needed more help assembling the pieces, but both enjoyed the craft. They were proud to hang them on the wall.
The highlight of today, I think, was the Cookies! I found a Best Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe on Allrecipes.com and started by measuring out the ingredients before our “school time.” When I went to look for chocolate chips, I panicked – we had NONE. We did, however, have a bag of M&Ms. We also omitted the nuts by preference.
I put the mixer onto the kids’ workbench and helped them make their cookies. The kids had fun taking turns dumping different bowls of ingredients into the KitchenAid mixer, as I read through the recipe with them. Once the mixing was complete, I set the kids free to play and started dishing out the dough onto the cookie sheets. I used Silpat mats and ended up baking them for closer to 17 minutes, as opposed to the 10 suggested. They are So yummy!!!

Rip’s Letter “C” Challenge – My son LOVES to try to tell jokes. “I have a joke. When a person falls and hits their head and bounces. Ha ha ha!” I’m trying to improve his material. Each of these challenge pages has a cute joke! Today, we skipped the tracing and just worked on the joke. It was that kind of day.
Finally, we hung the Letter C (in big and little form) on our wall. It joined A, B, H and T. I named letters and had the kids point them out to me. Practice makes perfect!
