Preschool Homeschool : The Letter B
We opted to homeschool instead of enrolling our son in standard Pre-K. I am sharing with you some of the activities we did to learn about the letter B. Whether you homeschool or not, these are short and sweet ways to reinforce letter learning.
Banana Pancakes : This is one of our FAVORITE recipes! If you want to go a step farther, make the letter B out of the batter, and give your learners the letter of the day on their plate! Also, Bacon makes a great accompaniment.
Coloring Pages : My daughter (2) is a big fan of My Big Big Friend , so I printed out Bongo. My son (4) likes Rescue Bots, so I printed out Boulder and Bumblebee. I started using two small cookie sheets to organize each child’s activities for the day.
Highlight-a-Letter by Babbling Abby.
I use the more complicated page (including tracing and printing space) on the first day and the less complicated one for review on the second.
We work very closely on this activity. He chooses whether he wants to make red “x”s or color in correct squares with yellow. I help with whichever he doesn’t choose. He makes the decisions, and I help refocus him. This one-on-one learning is fantastic!
We purchased the Letter of the Week Curriculum as part of a Homeschool Bundle a while back. It is $15 to download as of the time this post was written. I use each letter’s printed page for my youngest (2) to color in while my oldest (4) does the highlight-a-letter.
The B is for Butterfly Craft by Crystal&Co was gorgeous! I was so excited, gathering the materials and finally realized – I had wax paper – NOT contact paper!! Ahhhhh!
So… I ended up cutting out the Letter B (butterfly outline) in black construction paper, then laying a sheet of wax paper over it.
I spread some watered down elmers glue over the areas I wanted the kids to fill (the wings) and they started putting cut out pieces of tissue paper onto the glue. I would brush some more on top of the pieces as needed.
When they finished, I traced the letter b with Elmers glue (on top of the tissue paper) and then took the letter out from under the wax paper and laid it onto the glue.
We let everything dry on some cookie cooling racks. Then, I cut the excess off and hung the butterflies on the door with painters tape. They are beautiful! By the way, those cookie sheets I mentioned above – they got used to control the mess during craft time as well.
The Bean Butterfly Craft from Teach.com looked so adorable, I had to try! I just put glue on the page and let them dump beans on and they seemed to enjoy it. A bit messy, but sensory play is a good thing.

I hung pictures of the Letter B, in upper AND lowercase, on our wall. We already had the Letters A & H from our first lesson, and our collection is growing.
